Members and friends of Caius Boat Club gathered at the Boathouse on Sunday 21^st February to launch its magnificent new Empacher Ladies' Four. The launch party consisted of the Master, Sir Christopher Hum; the President of CBC, Mr Martin Wade; the Senior Treasurer, Dr Jimmy Altham and the Director of Development, Dr Anne Lyon after whom the boat was named. In his speech Dr Altham thanked Anne for her long-term support of CBC and particularly for including the proposal to purchase the new boat as one of the projects funded by the Caius Fund 2009. Replying, Anne thanked Jimmy for his kind words and pointed out that it was a team effort on the part of the whole of the Development Office.

Professor Stephen Hawking has been awarded the Cosmos Award by the Planetary Society. The award honours individuals whose innovative presentations about science have captured the public imagination. The presentation was made in Cambridge, as Stephen had been unable to travel to Pasadena in January.

Louis Friedman, Executive Director of The Planetary Society said “Stephen Hawking is a science superstar, his insights span the universe and deepen our understanding of all physics.”

After dinner on Tuesday 16 February 2010, the Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks who is an Honorary Fellow of the College, gave a talk in the Master’s Lodge, entitled "The Role of a Religious Leader in Public Life and in a Secular Society". Dr Jimmy Altham writes…

"There was general agreement that this was a brilliant talk, full of intellectual content lucidly expressed and enlivened by some very funny stories. One main theme was that religious leaders should not hold political power. Religious leaders often cannot, consistently with their faith, engage in the kinds of compromise necessary for successful political outcomes. Lord Sacks showed that, following his degree in Philosophy here, he had continued to deepen his knowledge of the subject, reading widely in the debates on the nature of civil society and the role of all those activities that take place outside the formal economy and state institutions. Discussion of these matters in the UK is less extensive and of lower quality than the best work in the USA, and one task of a religious leader is to advance public understanding of them, give them greater prominence, and help to exemplify good models within his faith community. Lord Sacks paid tribute to the work of Caians in this field, notably David Daube and Michael Oakeshott."

Caius Boat Club will be naming our magnificent new Empacher Ladies' Four at noon on Sunday 21st February at the Boathouse. The boat will be named 'Anne Lyon', in recognition of Anne's consistent support for the Boat Club. It has already proved itself as a valuable addition to the fleet, and much appreciated by our women.

The White House has announced that Professor Stephen Hawking has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honour

Prof Hawking said: "It is a great privilege to be awarded the Medal, especially by President Obama, whom I admire deeply”.
